William W. “Corky” Yankey, 89, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, at Baptist Health Hardin Hospital in Elizabethtown.
Corky was a native of Washington County, born on July 13, 1936, to the late Will and Osie Parrott Yankey. He was a 1954 graduate of Springfield High School. He went on to earn a BS in Education in 1959, from Georgetown College where he played football for four years. He later earned his master’s degree from Georgetown College and a Rank I from Eastern Kentucky University.
A dedicated educator, he served Washington County Schools for 36 years before retiring in 1995. During his career, he was a history teacher and guidance counselor at Washington County High School. He also held positions as the Director of Pupil Personnel, Maintenance Supervisor, and Transportation Director. A passionate coach, Corky coached football, basketball, baseball, and track at various levels, including a notable tenure as a basketball coach at St. Catharine College.
Corky was a longtime member of Springfield United Methodist Church and more recently attended Mackville United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, J.T. Yankey and Steve Yankey, and two sisters, Kathryn Yankey and Dorothy Mae Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma Jean Hardin Yankey; his children, Michelle (Mark) Sutton of Frankfort and David (Stacey) Yankey of Floyds Knobs, IN; and his grandchildren, Eli Sutton, Kimber Sutton, Caleb Yankey, Katie Yankey, and Micah Coy Yankey. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Friday, August 15th at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. David Walden, Rev. Tobe Yankey, and Rev. Kyle Yankey officiating.
The burial will be held at Cemetery Hill in Springfield.
Serving as casket bearers will be Glenn Devine, Jim Mattingly, Tobe Yankey, Pogo Mann, Mark Sutton, Michael Gash, and Kyle Yankey. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Nick Lewis, Judy Congleton, Kathy Fields, Mary Ellen Leachman, Connie Smith, Pauletta Kutter, Mary Brady, and Jack Waff.
Visitation will be held at the Carey & Son Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 on Thursday and after 8:00 on Friday morning.
