William Wesley Shewmaker, age 99, of Springfield, KY passed away at 8:20 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2022 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.
A native of Washington County, he was born on September 4, 1923 to the late Marvin K. and Florence Sweeney Shewmaker.
He was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church, attended Mackville High School, was a partner in the former Farmers Supply Company of Springfield and was a longtime partner in Springfield Excavating Company. Mr. Shewmaker was an Army veteran of World War II and was the last survivor of Port Battalion 492 stationed in Guadalcanal.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Jean Christerson Shewmaker on May 25, 2016; a brother, Marvin Sweeney Shewmaker on March 3, 1994 and two sisters, Margaret Arnold on August 15, 2011 and Katherine Devine on January 9, 2013.
Survivors include his son, David Shewmaker (Helen Jo) of Danville; his daughter, Jackie Mattingly of Springfield; four grandchildren, Merritt Lee Chastain (Steve), Ann Weslen Cheser (Clay), Nicholas Shewmaker (Beth) and Nathan Shewmaker (Jessica) and nine great grandchildren, Ann Michelle Chastain, Michael Chastain (Anne Thomas), Matt Cheser, Kayton Shewmaker, Evan Shewmaker, Kenlee Shewmaker, Ann Clayton Cheser, Olivia Shewmaker and Davis Shewmaker.
A graveside service and interment will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 6th at the Peter Cemetery in Mackville with Bobby Joe Mattingly, officiating.
Military rites will be conducted at the gravesite by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jackie Mattingly, Clay Cheser, Steve Chastain, Nick Shewmaker, Nathan Shewmaker, Michael Chastain, Matt Cheser and Evan Shewmaker.
Visitation will be from 9:30 until 10:30 Tuesday morning at the Carey & Son Funeral Home.
