Wanda Shewmaker Matherly, 99, of Springfield, KY peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Cooper Trail Senior Living in Bardstown.
She was born on March 28, 1926 in Mackville, KY to Hansford and Mable Bottom Shewmaker.
A faithful member of Cornerstone Christian Church, Wanda was cherished as a loving daughter, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was known for her generous heart and kind spirit, often making candy and treats for those around her, including church members, the local bank staff, the mailman, and the landscaper. Wanda loved cooking, playing cards, tending the yard, and was a devoted Kentucky Wildcats fan. She graduated from Mackville High School, where she was a cheerleader.
On May 5, 1946, Wanda married George Vernon Matherly, who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Susan Wood and her son, David Matherly.
Wanda is survived by three grandchildren; Kristin Flenniken (Rob) of CA, Matt Wood (Olivia) of NC and Allison Noble (Jeff) of FL; nine great-grandchildren, Kelcey and Kyle Flenniken; Ashlyn, Gracyn and Emery Wood; Heron, Hue, Jupiter and Jude Noble; her son-in-law, Gil Wood; daughter-in-law, Gloria Matherly and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, April 12th at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Pastor Warren Whitaker, officiating.
Burial will be in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville.
Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the same day.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Wanda’s dear friend and neighbor, Angela Medley, for her years of love and companionship, as well as to the dedicated caregivers who supported Wanda over the past year and a half. Your kindness and care were a true blessing.
