He is survived by his wife Lou Moyers Darland, daughter Aletha (Patrick) Abell of Bardstown and two grandsons Collin Abell of Florence, KY and Isaac Abell of Bardstown and great granddaughter Chloe of Florence. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
As long as his health allowed he was an active member of the Mackville Church of Christ where he was baptized at an early age and was one of the oldest members in attendance.
Education was always very important to him. He graduated from Mackville High School in 1957. Upon the completion of two years at St. Catharine College he began his teaching career at Glasscock Elementary in Marion County and taught there until 1965 when he began teaching at Mackville Elementary. He served as principal of Mackville Elementary School, Old Springfield Elementary School, and Washington County Elementary School. He was then promoted to the Washington County Schools District Office and served there for 18 years as DPP, Federal Programs Coordinator, Food Service Director, Instructional Supervisor, and Assistant Superintendent until his retirement in 1994. He was extensively involved with school food service at both the state and federal levels and served in several offices and committees.
He enjoyed antiquing and displayed and sold antiques at several shows until his health prevented it. Even then he enjoyed going to shows and auctions and buying his favorite glassware – Carnival Glass and RS Prussia. And most important he enjoyed and was very proud of his grandsons, Collin and Isaac and his great granddaughter, Chloe.
In February, 1989 Governor Wallace Wilkinson signed the paperwork making him a Kentucky Colonel.
