Mattie Sue Perkins Schafer, age 86, of Springfield, KY passed away at 12:03 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the Spring View Hospital in Lebanon, KY.
A native of Washington County, she was born on August 7, 1938 to the late Richard C. “R.C.” and Ruby Mae Yankey Perkins.
She was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church, a 1956 graduate of Springfield High School and a former teller for the Springfield State Bank.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Ralph E. Schafer on September 2, 2011; a son, Richard Thomas “Rick” Smith on December 7, 2013 and a brother, George H. Perkins on August 11, 2010.
Mattie Sue will lovingly be remembered for her Southern hospitality and many musical performances for friends, family and her church.
Survivors include a daughter, Polly Sue Gaines (Steve) of Erlanger; a son, Dr. Michael Smith (Lou Ann) of Louisville; a daughter-in-law, Molly Keene Smith of Louisville; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Marion (Don) of Daytona Beach, Florida and a special friend and caregiver, Tommie Poole of Springfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 11th at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Aaron Sherrell, officiating.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
In keeping with her wishes cremation will follow the funeral service and her cremains will be inurned on Cemetery Hill.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 Monday and after 8:00 Tuesday morning at the Carey & Son Funeral Home.
