Joseph Matthew Shumate

Joseph Matthew Shumate, age 88, of Mooresville, KY passed away at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the Landmark of Bardstown Nursing Home.

He was born in Nelson County on February 3, 1932 to the late Willie and Mary Clark Shumate.

He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, a retired employee of the General Electric Company and an Army veteran.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Dorothy Moore Shumate on December 3, 2020; a granddaughter, Gracie Moore Shumate on May 2, 2008; two brothers, Thomas E. Shumate on October 15, 1931 and Robert Lawrence “R.L.” Shumate on November 14, 1990 and four sisters, Mildred Jones on May 31, 1978, Betty Lewis on January 14, 2012, Judy Clark on August 18, 2016 and Mary Etta Pyle on December 16, 2020.

Survivors include; a son, David Shumate of Springfield; a daughter, Dawn Majors of Oklahoma City, OK; five grandchildren, Trevor, Paige, Molly and Thomas Shumate and Dustin Majors and two sisters, Barbara Keeling (Eugene) of Bardstown and Janice Curtsinger (John) of Mackville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Wednesday, December 30th at the New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Tobe Yankey, the church pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the New Hope Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7:30 Tuesday at the Carey & Son Funeral Home and after 1:00 Wednesday morning at the church.
