Jimmie Ward Obituary

James Charlie “Jimmie” Ward passed at his home at 1698 Mackville Road, the place of his birth, in the early morning hours of Sunday, February 5, 2023.

He was born October 13, 1934 to the late Charlie Andrew and Elizabeth Riley Ward.

He was a 1952 graduate of Springfield High School, attended the University of Kentucky, served in the U.S. Army and engaged in tobacco and Grade A dairy farming with his dad.  He and his dad earned several awards for dairy excellence as well as the top dairy in Kentucky for 50-100 head.

Upon the death of his father, he continued farming.  He served on various boards with Dairymen, Inc.  When he quit farming, he worked as a security guard for several years.  In addition, he served as a driver for Sansbury Care Center.  He married Barbara Hall in 1958 at the Springfield Christian Church where he served as a deacon and, at one time, church treasurer.

He was an early supporter of Camp Calvary and delivered the first beds at the camp from Fort Knox.  He remained interested in the camp developments the rest of his life.  In addition, he enjoyed attending the Men for Christ.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Richard Davis Ward and a sister, Dorothy W. Mattingly, a niece, Alma Mattingly and a nephew, David Ward.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Barbara Hall Ward; a son, James Kenneth Ward of Springfield; a daughter, Ellen Ward Biddle and her husband, Jeff; a granddaughter, Kayla Biddle Caudill and her husband, Nigel; a great granddaughter, Anna all of Lexington; two nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 8th at the Springfield Christian Church with Bro. Ken Ward officiating.  He will be assisted by Bro. Roland Youmans.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8:00 Tuesday at the Carey & Son Funeral Home and after 8:00 Wednesday morning at the church.

Burial will be at Bethlehem Cemetery beside his parents in the family lot. Military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Howard and Tickle Ragland, Kathy Fields, Cortney Johnson, Helen Russell, Susan Ford, VNA caregivers (Kim Thomas, Kim Osborne, Lora Wood, Cindy Hunt and Teri Miles), Hosparus Caregivers and Visiting Angels (Angel Castillo).
