Jimmie Carrico Obituary

James Edward “Jimmie” Carrico, age 92, of Springfield, KY died peacefully Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

A native of Washington County, he was born on January 13, 1933 to the late Forrest Albertus and Mary Ella Smith Carrico.

Jimmie was a life-long carpenter, owner of the Western Auto (10 years), a delivery man for Washington County Hardware, Deputy Sheriff (4 years), long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and Lions Club, he was the 1987 Washington County Citizen of the Year, served on several local boards, including the Board of Elections (36 years), Water Board (15 years), and the City and County Zoning Boards (25 years), and served as the City of Springfield Public Works Director (16 years) where he was instrumental in the supervision of the Main Street Renovation and the building of Idle Hour Park. He was a participant in the building and renovation of houses with the Stewarts of Appalachia and the Knights of Columbus in Eastern Kentucky (10 years). He was a member of the St. Dominic Catholic Church.

Preceding him in death was a son, Freddie Carrico; a daughter-in-law, Rita Carrico; grandson, Frankie Carrico; a sister, Helen Smith and six brothers, James T. “Jake”, Maurice, Robert, Russell, Emanuel and Leo Carrico.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nellie Rebecca Smith Carrico; two sons; Jerry (Becky) Carrico and Glen Carrico both of Tennessee; four daughters, Ella (Mike) Elliott of Springfield, Gayle (Donnie) Hamilton of Bardstown, Pat (Steve) Schindler of Lexington and Sheila Carrico of Versailles; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and three sisters, Isabelle Begley and Louise Cambron of Springfield and Rhudell Fowler of Louisville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, February 17th at the St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. David Farrell and Rev. Mark Hamilton, officiating.

Burial will be on Cemetery Hill in Springfield.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt, Brian and Tommy Carrico, Brandon Hamilton and Alec Schindler, granddaughters, Kim Sexton and Natalie Robinson and nephews, Forrest Carrico and Steve Carrico.

A prayer service will be held at 6:30 Sunday evening at the Carey & Son Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 Sunday and after 7:00 Monday morning  until 10:30 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
