Charles Walter Lewis, age 91, of the Poortown Community of Washington County, passed away at 7:35 p.m., Monday, May 11, 2026 at the Springfield Nursing & Rehab Center.
A native of Washington County, he was born on November 11, 1934 to the late A.B. and Nettie Mattingly Lewis.
He was a member of the Willisburg Baptist Church, he served fourteen years in the National Guard and was a retired farmer and was well known throughout the county for hauling livestock to the local stockyards as well throughout the week to the Bourbon Stockyards in Louisville.
As a young man Charles worked alongside his father, A.B. helping him operate their steam engine which they ran for many years. Later when they decided to sell the machine that had served them for such a long time, they sold it to Ritchie Curtis of Columbia and have since become longtime friends.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Thompson Lewis; a son, Mike Lewis and his wife, Lea of Springfield; two grandchildren, Jennifer Short and her husband, Justin of Springfield and Robert Lewis and his wife, Emmalee of Bowling Green and two great grandchildren, Adalyn and Alaina Short.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 15th at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. J.W. Hatfield officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. Gary Mills.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Willisburg.
Serving as honorary will be Bobby Cheatham, Bobby Mattingly, Billy Thompson, Marvin Jr. Cheatham, Larry Gritton, Kenny Hardin and Ritchie Curtis.
Serving as casket bearers will be Robert Lewis, Charles Chesser, Harold Hardin, Ronald Lewis, J.P. Blandford and Tim Graves.
Visitation will be after 10:00 Friday morning at the Carey & Son Funeral Home.
