Calvin Eugene Smothers

Calvin Eugene Smothers, age 93, of Louisville, passed away Monday, July 1, 2025 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville after a brief illness.

He was born June 9, 1932 in the Logan community to the late Richard and Malisa Pierce Smothers.  He attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and made a profession of faith there on July 14, 1945.  He enlisted in the military in 1951 and served in the Korean War.  Calvin enrolled in Eastern Kentucky University on the GI Bill in 1954.  He married Mary Audrey Lanham on November 5, 1954 at Pleasant Hill Baptist and son Rodney Craig Smothers was born in August, 1955.  Calvin graduated with a degree in accounting in 1958 and worked for the Kentucky Department of Revenue.  Pamela Dawn Smothers was born in April, 1960.  Calvin’s career took him to L&N Railroad and Kentucky Fried Chicken from which he retired in 1992.

He was at various life stages, a horseman, gardener, cattleman, a member of Highview Baptist and of Pleasant Hill Baptist, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and of Post 1170 VFW.

Calvin was preceded in death by two brothers, McKinley Smothers and Gilbert Smothers and seven sisters, Florence Lanham, Iva Elliott, Ruby Pinkston, Gladys Marksbury, Hazel Lanham, Christine Elliott and Frances Foster.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mary Audrey Lanham Smothers; a son, Rod Smothers (Connie) of Crestwood; a daughter, Pam Barrett of Louisville; four grandchildren, Katie Smothers (Trent Raffaelli), Rachel Smothers Clark (Tyler), Ryan Johnson (Kinsey) and Ben Johnson; three great grandchildren, Madilynn Johnson, Pierce Johnson and Elizabeth Clark; a sister, Eleanor Jenkins of Louisville and a host of nieces and nephews who are the children of his ten siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Monday, July 7th at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Lanham, officiating.

Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Johnson, Ben Johnson, Katie Smothers, Rachel Clark, Tyler Clark and Travis Lanham.

Visitation will be after 10:00 Monday morning at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 1589 Logan Road, Gravel Switch, KY 40328.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
